Made from birch, the chests are of very good quality and retain their original brass plate handles. They are a lovely colour and of narrow width yet stand at 30.5 inches high. As such  they are an ideal proportion to act as a pair of bed side chests and were almost certainly made for such a role. Finding original pairs of bedside chests is difficult and this pair have Maple depository labels applied to their backs and were most likely retailed by Maples in London during the late 19th century.

“A very useful pair of bedside chests dating from the late 19th century."
