A pair of 19th century Grand Tour bronze copies of the famous Luxor obelisk. The original Luxor obelisk is 3000 years old and made of red granite that was quarried in Aswan. It stands at an impressive 22 metres high and is one of a pair originally erected in front of the temple in Luxor by Ramses II. Now located since 1836 on Place de la Concorde, Paris having been gifted to France by the Ottoman Empire at that time. These Grand Tour examples show the hieroglyphic markings on all four elevations and are mounted on square black marble plinth bases, each with a cast bronze fence surround. Both are in excellent original condition with only minor historic chips to the marble plinth bases. The bronze obelisks have a mellow golden patina, which shows the hieroglyphic markings in well-defined contrast.
