Dating from the mid 19th century, this folding travelling mirror is made from pear wood rather than the more commonly seen mahogany. On occasion pear wood was used by Irish cabinet makers as it has the same appearance as satinwood. This example retains the original bevelled mirror plate and when folded flat, offers protection to the mirror glass. This type of furniture, often referred to as campaign furniture, was used by officers when on military campaign in The British Empire. It would make an unusual and decorative addition to any bathroom or bedroom interior.
